Remembrance Day a holiday?

remembrance day

The discussion on if Remembrance Day should be a holiday as resurfaced once again.  Provinces such as Nova Scotia have a day off school for all students on Remembrance Day.  In Ontario, government and bank employees receive a day off work but all students are in class.  Are there benefits to being at school on this day, to reflect to question? Or, should this be a day as in Nova Scotia where students can reflect at home or go to a war memorial with family or friends or whatever they feel is right for them.

Write a paragraph outlining your opinion if Ontario should make Remembrance Day be a holiday for all students.

I think students should go to school on Remembrance Day because they will probably have an assembly based on Remembrance Day. Students can also learn about the war and will have a good time to think about the people who were in the war. You could also maybe even watch some movies or slide shows regarding Remembrance day too.

I think Remembrance Day should not be a holiday

Kids should go to school because they would learn more about Remembrance Day and about the soldiers and other people that died during the war. We also read books and watch video’s at school to help us learn more. You could think about the soldiers that died at school and if you know someone that died you could discuss it with your friends not only your family. If we missed school we would miss the assembly and you learn a lot of things in the assembly and if we are at home we wouldn’t even think of all the people that died during the war. No one would even do the one minute of silence to remember the people that gave their lives for our country. That is why I think students should come to school to remember the soldiers and wars on Remembrance Day.

No!!!!!There shouldn’t be a holiday on remembrance day because you get to have a assembly and we get to remember some people in the 1 minute silence in the assembly and we get to watch a slideshow and other cool stuff at school. So I think we shouldn’t have a holiday on remembrance day.

I think Remembrance Day should be a holiday because this is a day when we remember the soldiers who fought the war of freedom for Canada. We should spare some time to talk to people about Remembrance Day other then at school. In Nova Scotia schools are off on Remembrance Day, students stay home or do whatever they feel like doing, it’s unfair for us to go to school. I also like to say that I agree with Opposition member of the Ontario because they want Remembrance Day declared as a holiday. Progressive Conservative Lisa MacLeod will make November 11 as a holiday. She says “It’s time Ontario recognized Remembrance Day as a holiday, 34 per cent of Canada’s war dead in Afghanistan called the province home. The bill would also require every school in Ontario to hold a Remembrance Day service on the last day of classes before November 11”. MacLeod says “Remembrance Day would replace Ontario’s three-year-old “Family Day” holiday in February”. There also are two separate Facebook groups with hundreds of thousands of members calling for Remembrance Day to be declared a statutory holiday in Ontario.
Below is an actual messages taken from one of the facebook events:
“If the idea of making Remembrance Day a statutory holiday is to get people participating in RD events and actually know what RD is all about, I don’t think making it a holiday will achieve those goals. People will more then likely stay at home then doing God knows what completely foregoing even the 2mins of silence at 11:11. Not to say this is a general POV of mine for everyone, I’m sure turnout for Remembrance Day celebrations will increase a slight. But I find, it shames me to say, Toronto has a low perspective of our troops and our military history. I tried passing off ideas to raise money for our vets at several local events, the idea was quickly shot down because it promoted our military which we don’t support”.

I think remembrance day should be a holiday and kids should get a day off of school. I feel this way because kids go to school every day and don’t get enough holidays. If I had the day off school I would buy a poppy from those people that stand by all the stores. I would remember the people that have died. I would spend the day with my family and friends. We can still remember the soldiers even though we are not a school.

I think we should get a day off because those soldiers fought so we could be free why not just have a day so you can thank them they did a lot for us and if we are not going to celebrate this holiday then way celebrate any other holidays this holiday has as much rights as any other holiday dose.

i think that rememberance day should be a holiday.Because some people vist their relatives that were in the war as a family. But if your have a son or dauaghter and they are not their it just doesn’t feel right and people need to go home and remember those people that gave away their life to give us fredom.

I think we should not have a holiday on remembrance day because if we have a holiday we will miss all the fun we have at school, and we also miss the fun will have with are friends, and most importantly we are going to miss the assembly. If you are not coming to school you would not read books about how soldiers fought, and how they ate food or what they ate.
