Rethinking “disABILITY”

As a culture, we have historically placed “disabled” persons in a negative way. The term “disabilities” assumes that they are not able.  The Paraorchestra shows how we need to rethink how these persons are viewed.

Please write 2-3 sentences per line explaining your new thinking.

1. Write one connection 2. Write one surprise   3. How does this relate to another thing or idea that we have seen, discussed, watched, or  read about this year?

    2. One thing that really surprised me was the old man because I never knew you could actually use a kinect for playing music.

    3. I liked the video with the boy that played basketball because there’s honestly nothing different about anyone with a disability.

One connection is that we both have the rights to try or do anything no matter how hard it can be.

One thing that surprised for me was the that cant see and with all those strings he still managed to do it.I cant even do it properly and he still managed even though he is blind.

I liked the video with the boy basketball player and how he scored six 3 pointers and he has disability.I also think they should have put him on earlier in the game.

    1) One connection I know is that once I saw this movie on T.V. and it had a girl in it that was disabled so everyone would treat her differently but then they realize that even if that girl has a disability she can still do the same things that they all can so they started to be nice to her.

    2) The thing that really surprised me was that now cause of new technology you can play music on electronics no matter you have a disability or not. For example Lyn composes music by touching the I pad and mac with her nose so that proves that you don’t need hands to do something or play an instrument.

    3) It relates to the video we saw about the boy playing basketball even though he had a disability or that lady who was using the sounds around her to talk. This means that they are no different than normal people, it’s just they think differently but they can still do the same things like in the video when that blind and deaf man was playing a clarinet.

This is how we can rethink about people with disabilities.

This reminds me of Terry Fox because he lost his leg yet he ran almost all around Canada while he getting cured from cancer! that’s something a person without a disability probably wouldn’t do.

A surprise to me was from the video we watched about the band that had people who had a disability. The thing that surprised me was the man who was blind and deaf. he couldn’t see or hear what was going on around him, but he is still in a band and he play’s really good music.

This relates to a subject we took at school which is “The Danger Of One Story.” if a person tells you that all people with disability’s cant do things that a person without a disability can do there wrong. Some people who have a disability cxan do things you could never do. so basically NEVER underestimate a person for what they can or cant do.

That’s what i think about people with disability’s.

One connection-I have a friend that has a disability. She can’t see.I thought she couldn’t do any fun things. Then when I saw her at the library I saw her reading the books for people for disabilities.

One surprise-I never knew that people who can’t hear or see, can play instruments that well.

One connection #2-We watched this video about the boy playing basketballeven if he had a disability.

#1One connection would be that Terry Fox had a disability because of cancer and he almost went all the way around Canada.

#2One surprise would be that in Charles Hazelwood’s Paraorchestra man who was paralysed could play the trumpet through technology.

#3It relates to the autistic boy who practised for one game and then when his team was losing the coach let him in. He he scored six three pointers in the game. The coach should have let him in to the game before they were losing.

one connection is that everyone has the right’s to try anything no matter how hard or easy it is.

The thing I find surprising is that that even people who are blind, deaf or anything they can still play music even without there hands for example how mac touches the Ipod with her nose TO PLAY MUSIC!

WE saw this video about about a boy playing basketballven if he had all disabilty

One connection is that I have a friend that has some disabilities but she can still do a lot of things that we can do. She can read and write and can also play instruments. Just cause someone has disabilities does not mean that they can’t do things that we do.

One surprise is that Clarence could play an instrument by blowing into a mike that was connected to a computer. Another surprise was how the girl was playing the drums on an I pad with her nose.

One Comment- I thought that it was really cool how people with disabilities can play instruments so well. What surprised me was Lloyd can play the clarinet even though he can not see or hear.

One connection is that I know a person who has disability that can write, read, play and do anything he want’s. People who have disability can do anything they want.

One surprise is that the girl who play’s music with her iPod. When I saw her at the beginning I never knew she played anything but she she was playing music with her iPod.

This relates to the video with that woman that has disability and she is trying to show that every disable person can do anything.

One connection I have is a few years ago at Kindree there was a kid that was blind but it didn’t stop him from playing many games with his friends.

The most surprising part in this video was that the man injured in a car accident could still play the trumpet with his mouth through the laptop.

This relates to the video we watched about the boy who had autism and played basketball. Just because he was autistic, people assumed he couldn’t do anything well. On the contrary, he proved that even if people are disabled they can still do the things we can do and even better.

In conclusion I think everyone should be given the chance to participate in everyday life.

One connection :This reminds me of Beethoven who composed even being deaf. Even when he was deaf that would not stop from composing. Beethoven was at his best when he composed the ninth symphony and that was when he was deaf.

One surprise: It surprised me when I saw the person who played the clarinet even though he was deaf and blind. I don’t know he was capable of playing music. He is really good at what he does and I’ve never heard of some one who play a clarinet well being deaf and blind.

Something we’ve discussed :This also reminds of how Jason McElwade was autistic and loved basket ball. But one night they let him play once and he scored six three pointers in less than five minutes.

The connection I have is a friend that has a disability. I still have a lot of fun with my friend and I enjoy spending time with him even though he has a disability. We have fun playing together and we do fitness friends together. When I spend time with my friend, it makes me realize that it doesn’t matter if you have a disability you can still accomplish anything that you want.

Something that surprised me about the video was that all the people in the group had some type of disability. I really never knew that a person can play drum beats on an iPad with there nose and that is really incredible. I am playing the guitar now and it is really hard and I can’t imagine what it would be like playing the guitar blind or having no hands.

In a magazine I have at home called national geographic kids there was a boy who had a physical disability. His disability made him a stronger person. He doesn’t have legs but he wanted to do things that everyone else could do. So he got artificial legs and he can use them to walk, run and bike. He can swim and surf to but he doesn’t have to use his fake legs for that. He didn’t believe the doctors when they told him he couldn’t do it. He just believed that he could.

    Rhianne,
You have done a great job here saying your opinion, posting amazing comments and deep connections to other stories. When you said that “it makes me realize that it doesn’t matter if you have a disability you can still accomplish anything that you want”, I truly believe that this is a very positive message for us all to believe and know.
Thanks for your hard work on this response, Mr.Woods

1)Connection is that my uncle is disabled in a wheel chair but he can still do stuff that we can do. He is really good with computers and he created his own language for people. They point at a chart with a word on it and there assistants can no what they are saying.
2)Thing that surprised me is the head peace. When he blew in the head peace and it made trumpet noises
    3) one connection is that in class we watched a video of a boy that was disabled and played basketball and got 3 3 pointers in a row and proved his team wrong.

We watched a documentary at class called Charles Hazlewood’s Para Orchestra and there were five people who were either mentally or physically disabled. Some are disabled since birth or some serious accident. This reminds me about Beethoven. My brother once told me that Beethoven was at his best in music and that was when he was deaf.

once we saw the people who are disabled they wonderfully showed there talent through various instruments. Every other day so called normal people like us see them around us and feel pity for them, we judge them and clarify their behavior in our way.
Earlier we thought people with disabilities can not accomplish what we think we can, but the para orchestra proves that no matter how disabled you are you can accomplish any thing. All we have to do is change the way we look at them. Society should support them with out judging them and also Government should put more budget to improve their
everyday life. Every year the encouragement from the Terry Fox run or even Richard in our class shows that how responsible they are towards the the good deeds, Terry Fox was unstoppable and my friend Richard take challenge in every day basis.

Ariq, I believe the comment that you made here about society not judging, and how we look at these students is so very important. As well, your statement about Richard is so true. Really well stated paragraph and opinion—MrWoods

I have a connection that is I have a friend that has a disability and they can do many things.my suprise was that everyone there that is playing a instrument has a disability and they may not hear or see but they can still play these instruments very well. This relates to when our class watched a vedio with the boy who had a disability and he made many shots from a far distance.

One connection…..is that i saw this show called,The first key and well its over but i still watch it sometimes. it was about this girl who had a dissabilty but she might of looked alitle bit diffrent but, on the inside and outside she was exactly the same as others! she would make her parents breakfeast and she would play the piano to.She was so funny and nice to others she would think of herself and exactly the same and its true!! she is no diffrent than others!we should all not judge people on the outside…… its the inside that counts!

One suprise is……. That once i saw the people with disabiltys playing the base you know using a ipad to make drum beats its very very amazing how we can do somany things with electronics….having a disabilty is never ever a bad thing! and i hope everybody knows that! and when the old man was blind and playing all those strings with no eye vishion thats just well………..AMAZING!

i liked the video with the basketball player who had a disabilty but he was still on the team and amazing tnx. for reading!
