What’s your opinion on cell phones/ smart phones in the classroom?

http://www.parentcentral.ca/parent/education/article/861343–allow-cellphones-in-classrooms-mcguinty-says

As technology changes so rapidly, so does how we learn and approach learning in the classroom.  Are cell phones, or smart phones  (blacberry or iphones) a good thing to be allowed in our classrooms.

Some  positive arguments are that students will write more, through texting and instant messaging.  As well, students will be able to access the web quickly at their desk and look up information on their own.

Some negative arguments are that students will talk more and not pay attention in class, be distracted from instant messaging and emailing and these students will not be supervised in their use of the internet.

Some things to consider:

– age limits, not everyone can afford a cell/smart phone

– students will be more independent earlier, access to the web will be at their finger tips.

It is an interesting but difficult debate.

Give your answer in a paragraph—-if you are stuck with ideas, read some other comments from your classmates.

I think that students should be able to use there cell phones in class because what if it is a emergencey and someone one from your familey called to let you come and help and you couldn’t because your cell phone was in your bag and we will write more things in a instant text message and it is just easier and more fun that is why i think that cell phones should be aloud in class

cell phones should be allowed because students have the internet right there in there hands, encase of an emergency and if they have it on vibrate its okay

    Cell Phones to School

My opinion is kid’s should not bring cell phones to school.

First of all, no one will pay attention to what the teacher is saying because they will be busy texting or playing games on the phone and if kids don’t know what they are learning they will get lower marks on their report card.

Not everyone can afford can afford to buy cell phones. If younger kids have cell phones they might drop it or loose it somewhere and then the parents will be mad at the kids. They might even get stolen…

In the middle of a lesson someone’s phone might ring and then it would interrupt the whole class and it would be annoying and distracting to the other children that are trying to listen. McGuinty also said that they are a major distraction.

During a test students might even go on the internet and just check for the correct answer. If you need to check something on the internet we can just use the computers in our classroom.

These are all the reasons why kids should not bring cell phones to school:)

You should not be allowed to have cell phones in class because you won’t pay attention and then you won’t learn anything. Therefore you won’t get a good education which won’t do you good in life all because of the cell phone. However I do agree that you should be allowed to use a cell phone for emergencies only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For example whenever I ask my brother anything he is texting and he’s not paying attention. If you could use your phones during class you wouldn’t be paying attention and you wouldn’t learn.

It is good to have access to smart phone in school because we are in grade 5 and that means we are the oldest (after the teachers) so if we have a phone we can be a great example for the younger children in the school (show them how to be responsible, like we will be). We will write more instead of texting and messaging. We will be able to access the web quickly at our desk and look up information as needed.

It is not good to have a phone in school because we will talk more and pay less attention in class. We can distract the class by messaging and emailing. We will not be supervised in the use of the phone.

We should have our own cell phones because you might have left your lunch at home so you could’nt just walk home and tell your parents like that so you need a phone, so you can’t bug your teacher at lunch time saying,”Could I use the classroom phone?”Also students don’t how to acess to the classroom phone to their home phone.

Cell phones should not be allowed in the classroom because cell phones in class are a distraction.

Cell phones should not be allowed in class because you may not be listening to the teacher but you could be texting or listening to music or on the Internet.

Cell phones should not be allowed in class because it keeps kids occupied on Texting and Email on their cell phones more than focusing on schoolwork.

Cell phones should not be allowed because kids could cheat on tests and on schoolwork using their cell phones by looking up answers on the Internet or using the calculator.

Cell phones should not be allowed in class because kids could take pictures of classmates with out
permission and could put them on Facebook or Youtube.

Cell phones should not be allowed in class because kids will look at pictures and watch videos and not focus on the lessons the teacher is teaching.

I think that if teachers want to teach students how to get information from the internet they should teach them using computers not cell phones.

my opinion is that students should not be allowed to bring cell phones to school because if they have cell phones in class then they will not pay attention or consentart on the lesson because they are to busy on there phone listening to music, playing games, watching videos and apps, and going on to the internt.Reather then paying attention on the lesson and if they don’t pay attention then they will get a bad mark and will not know what to do, they also shouldn’t bring cellphone to school because little kids can drop the phone and it can break. This is why I think we sould not be allowed to bring cell phones.

    explaining an activity or sheet.

Also if an emergency does happen there there would be your cell with you that could have some saved numbers if the student/person doesn’t already know the phone number by heart.

Its also a good idea cause kids easily have intranet access
thats why cells should be allowed.

Cell phones should be allowed because if the teacher is telling about the internet website we can go on the internet easily. We should cell phones in class if there is a family emergency we can just go on the cell phones and its much easier to listen.

As my opinion I say that kids should not be allowed to bring cell phones.
First of all kids get adicted to them so in class
they would just do things such as playing games, textting, emailing and chatting and not learn anything.
When my cousin comes to my house she always plays with my dad’s cell phone and never stops and when i talk to her she does not liston.
Second of all kids get so distraced they do not learn anything and also get bad marks on their report card.kids might even lose it. when the teacher is teaching something and the phone rings it disturbs the whole class. The same thing happens in the temple when we are praying and someone forgot to switch off their phone and it rings it disturbs us.
    for all

you should not be allowed to have cell phones in class. you should be able to bring them to school but not use them in class.the olny thing a cell phone will do in class is distract you, and if you turn it off there is no point of you to use it in class. it should olny be for when you go home(unless you get picked up). there are phones every where in kindree that you use for emergencys, and whow would you text to anyway????

you shouldent bring cell phones to school!!!

Cellphones should not be aloud in school.Because if we bring cellphones everybody will not learn anything and waste our parents money.
we will not play with are friends and will only text mesges, games and calling people.
If we have a test and the phone rings it will distract all the kids in the class or even if were learning something.

I dont think we should have cell phones in class because they are distracting. For example the ringing, buzzing, texting, and taking pictures. I dont have a cell phone yet but even if I did I would not bring it too class. We come to school to learn.

Yes, phones can be used in high schools because. . .

-It can be used instead of a computer to refer.
-Can be used as a calculator.
-Can be used to take pictures of diagrams instead of drawing them.
-Can record the teacher’s notes instead of writing them down.
-You can take a video of experiments that are done in the lab.
-It can be used as an organizer to mark your schedule, to remind
you the assignment due date’s etc.
-It is also convenient for parents and children to keep in touch
with each other and inform each other of any last minute changes.
