How Should We Respond?

please read, respond and give us a “Your Say” paragraph on this complicated issue. About 250 million (about 8 times the total population of Canada) children between ages 5 and 14 work. About half of all child laborers work full-time. Many kids work in hard and often dangerous jobs. They do not go to school. Experts agree there is a lot kids can do to help child laborers everywhere. We read Branded and this book addressed this issue. How should we, Canada and the world react to this issue now as it appears it is not going away? Please give evidence from the text to support your answer.

In the video the man and woman said that no child under 16 should work on a farm or something else. That’s how I think we should solve the problem of child labour.

The kids in the video work 10 hours a day. This book is just like Amelia’s road because in that book Amelia works in the summer and goes to school in the school time. They only get a day off on Sunday. Imagine a life like that it would be so hard… They only earn about $7.35 and in the whole year they earn about $10,000. In their house the roof leaks and the walls move. What we can we do to help these kids??? We can create a charity where people donate clothes, food and money to help kids. Kids this age should be playing outside but these kids have to work and earn money to help their family. Emily Sandell was a young women who worked with kids in Nepal and Mexico. We just suppose that all kids have everything but that’s not the case. So that is why kids have to work in the sun….To earn money….This should be changed… If the kids don’t want to work they shouldn’t have to because all kids have the rights to live the way they want to and not be forced to work.

April 20, 2012 at 6:47 pm (12 years ago)What my opinion is that kids should not be working in that young age because the should have the right to go to school and not work all day or even half a day. the kids should be able to go out side play with their friends and have fun but instead they are working to earn money for their family or their self.I also think that they should not be forced to work or at least have a option to work. this video shows people that not all kids are the same. we don’t know about these poor young children cause we suppose everything is the way it is and we don’t try to find more of a deep understanding of what is happening to all these children.We should actually try to help/support these children so they don’t have to suffer and work in the sun all day long! This is important and this is why I think we should care about them and for them to have freedom and confident in them self that they have support!

April 20, 2012 at 7:01 pm (12 years ago)In my opinion I think that kids under 16 should not work.Also I think they should get a way better pay then $7.25 because it is harder to do this job then work at McDonald because at McDonald you get 10 dollars at minimum.They should not work 10 hours in the sun for such low pay.It is very very hard for the kids.They also should not get up at 5:30 in the morning just to go to work I would never be able to that.The kids be able to go to school and learn.Also they should be able to make friends.They should get a longer break if they have to work.They should not go to school in the summer they should got to school go as long as we go to school.They should get higher pay and if that happen they can go to school.There is connection to Amelias road because she is working just like these people are working.It is sad how the Americans that don’t have a lot of money had to do.They should not be working just for us to get food.This is what I have to say about child labor.

It’s really not fair because they only get paid so little money for doing so much work! I believe that every child should have the education they need. I can’t even imagine how hard it must be to work all day. Most stuff that says “made in china” on it probably means that it was made by a poor child will not education that only got paid like 30 cents a day to make like 20 of whatever it is you bought.

April 20, 2012 at 8:33 pm (12 years ago)in my opinion kids should NOT be working at such a young age. they should be able to go to school like every other kid. and they only get $7.35 an hour its just NOT worth it. and its not like they really have a choice. the kids work for 10 hours a day and they dont learn anything. they could be in school for 6 or 7 hours only and learn so much. there treating 5 and 14 year old’s like there 30! kids should be able to make lots of friends and keep them. they shouldn’t be going from school to school for a couple of months then working!like in the book Amelia’s Road, Amelia went from school to school and working on the farms. its really sad that kids are working at such a young age. every kid has the right to get good education and forcing kids to work needs to stop!!

Children from 5-14 should not be working they should have a school learning about different things. They should not be in a field farming or even in a building making shoes it is wrong and this should not be happening. What I think that should happen is we make a charity to send money to be able to build schools.
That charity will be able to send money to all those countries that do this. Children at 5 years old should be in school learning there ABC’s and 123’s not in a building making toys or out in a field getting wheat to make bread to ship out to another country it is not fair.

April 21, 2012 at 10:04 pm (12 years ago)In the slideshow and the video, I noticed that many kids are working in farms, mining, army, fishing, construction, blacksmith shops, and sales. The kids were not happy working in those places and I think they would rather be at school.
My opinion about child labour is that kids should not have to work. One of the reasons is that they are too young to work (5-14). Another reason is that they have to miss school so they don’t know how it’s like to be in school. And the last reason is they have to work so hard (example: one family’s kids have to work ten hours 6 days a week).
I myself have a connection to child labour when I went to Bangladesh. In Bangladesh I saw many kids working, like I saw someone being a housemaid and she was young. I also saw someone who was a storekeeper’s handy man. One last thing I saw in Bangladesh was a lot of sales people who were kids. That is my connection to child labour.
I also found another connection to child labour and that is to a book we read called “Amelia’s Road”. It reminds of this book because in the book Amelia was a child labourer. She worked on the farms just like Carlos’s kids. Amelia didn’t even know when her own birthday was.
There are some things that we could do to stop child labour. One of the things we can do is pass a law that child labour is illegal. Another thing we can do is donate to families like Carlos’ family. The last thing is they can send their kids to school. For these reasons child labour should stop.

April 22, 2012 at 4:28 pm (12 years ago)My opinion is that kids under 15 should not work, when I say that I don’t mean like working in school I mean working to get paid but that doesn’t mean chores you do round the house. This should stop because young kids like us need education until they are older (about fifteen). One connection I have to this video is in the book that we read called “Amelia’s road” Amelia had to move to a new house every year and she worked in fields all day. She did go to school but whenever she didn’t have school she had to work in fields. This is very bad and should stop, and Amelia didn’t even know when her birthday was.
In conclusion kids should not work until they are about fifteen and this is bad for kids’ education.

Every kid needs some type of freedom in their lives.Not working in factorys or on farms 20/4.7!!!!!!.One connection was how the book Amelia`s Road.How she never went to school, and how she worked on the flieds all day. We Can make a change.

In my opinion kids should NOT have to work because I think that is just not right. I think child labour is wrong. Maybe some people think it is alright but I bet the kids that are working don’t think it’s fair. All kids have the right to go to school and to have the freedom to play with friends and cousins. They shouldn’t have to work long hours everyday for small money. We should make sure that their parents have jobs where they can make enough money so that their kids don’t have to work to support the family. We can help by not letting our voices be unheard. A small group of kids can make a big difference. So speak up and stand beside kids around the world to fight for all kids to grow up healthy and happy.
So lets all speak up speak out and stand beside kids to help to fight.

If they don’t learn to read,write and learn,they wont understand a thing when they grow up. Kids should stop working because if they keep working they are not really learning anything. They are just working for nothing,they are not studying,not learning,all they are doing is working for there parents farming or working at strores. All they get for working for there parents is $7 an hour.

Most kids in agricultures work in their summer vacation for 10 hours!!!!
Can you believe it I can’t even work for 1 hour.
The two boys in the video work for 10 hours a day from Monday to Saturday all through their vacation!!!Sunday is the only day where they can play and act like kids. They don’t even get properly paid they get so less money for so much hard work.
That is just so not fair.
This video is very similar to the book called “Amelia’s road”. Amelia goes school just like us and the two boys in the video but in the summer amelia has to go to the farm to work just like the boys.
The kids should have the choice to work out in the sun and rain. Well kids should not be working till they are 16.
Chores are ok but 10 hour labour is so not ok!!
Most people think that everyone has
money but they don’t so kids have to work just to get money so their parents can pay for their clothes, food, School and other thing that are needed.
I say we give the poor the money they need so kids that are aged 5 to 16 don’t have to work.
Child labour should be illegal.

The kids wake up a 5:00 every morning and get to work and they work 6 days a week. I don’t think it is fair because they should go to school, university and enjoy childhood. This video is like the book Amelia’s Road because in the book and in the video the kids are working all day and also they are working very hard.
