Reshaping the internet
Listen to me read the article reshaping the internet as you read along.
With more than a billion Internet users worldwide, doubling that number – which should happen within the next decade – will obviously have an effect on the technology and the computer software industry.
Understanding the effect of another billion Internet users starts with considering where those people will be from. Although some will reside in North America, Europe and other developed countries, the majority of the growth willcome from the developing world. China is already the second largest Internet-using country in the world and will likely surpass the United States (the current leader) within the next year or two, adding 250 million Internet users over the next decade.
Countries such as India and Brazil should add another 200 million Internet users, while the fastest rate of growth is likely to come from Africa, which is starting from a much smaller base.
The next billion will differ in more ways than just geography. Most new Internet users will not speak English as their first language. Also, many new Internet users will have different cultural l views on hot-button issues such as online free speech, privacy, and copyright.
The next billion may also use different technology to access the Internet. The recent introduction of the XO laptop – previously known as the $100 laptop – demonstrates how the developing world has different requirements and how the technology industry will have to adapt to those changing environments. Indeed, flashy, high-end laptops with large screens, fast DVD players and enormous hard drives may give way to devices that are energy efficient, sturdier and better suited to users with varying levels of literacy.
Not only will the devices be different, but the next billion will access the Internet in different ways too. Internet connections by cablesd may be too expensive to install in some developing communities, which will make people rely on wireless and satellite-based connections. Those users may use mobile devices as their primary way to connect to the Internet, experiencing slower speeds of access and forcing e-commerce companies to adapt to a changing ways.
As we welcome the next billion, we must recognize that they will do more than just use the Internet. They will help reshape it in their own image and with their own values and change their own communities.

January 11, 2011 at 4:25 pm (13 years ago)what that article meant to was that we all use the internet but sometimes we might use it differently than others.evey billion people in the world don’t use it for just the internet they use it for maybe sending e-mails to the ruler of ther country to change there community or there soroundings.what i found interesting was the fact that some people only use the internet for good things and not using it for other things like playing games like most people in our class.

It meant a lot to me because this laptop is very cool!
Each kid can have a laptop so my cousins in India could
posibly get one of those.
One thing that I found intersting was the style of the laptop.
What I mean by style is that you can turn it and twist it.
That is not like a laptop we would all have!
While I was reading this article I had a question.
Does this computer have internet signal?
It will be soooooooooo much diffrent. Maybe there will be something else. As the next billion come we have to reconize that there is much more than the internet. They will help reshape it for diffrent values.
Well yes they will be diffrent from the current users! why you say. Well we have more experience. They will not know about google/yahoo we will. That is all the diffrence there is only experience.
Access would be availble at a libray.
Sometimes my borther brings his laptop to the libray becuase it is a quiet spot to do is high school work!

The article meant to me is that just because internet is fun and not affordable for most people in the world it can still make a difference. It can make a difference because it has internet access to go and do all your work instead for the kids in africa they have to bring all these papers that they might not be able to even afford too.
What I think how the internet will change that in the future there will be a 3D computer/laptop and you will have access to EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD.
The different users are well going to be like poor people in africa and Afghanistan and all other poor countries.
It might be available to China cause there not aloud to. Maybe more in Afghanistan because practiclly no one in Afghanistan has one.
So yeah thats everything I have learned from this article and yeah so………………..

What’s going to happen in the future? What’s going to happen for the next billion users? This is unpredictable but in my opinion it’s going to help a lot of people. Right now, we use internet to do so many things like, play games, research, homework, banking,….but around the world a lot a people not even have a computer or if they do they don’t have access to the net. Specially for those, internet will be very helpul in a way that they’ll use it to learn, it’s going to be their way of having school. An example of this is for the poor countries, where kids will have not just a computer but the access to the internet, it’s really going to help them. They will LEARN!!! As we know, so many kids don’t go to school for so many reasons, no money, schools are too far, or even in some places just the boys go to school and not the girls. I think giving a computer to each kid will help them in their life, they will become different people, kids with education, not kids that don’t no their alphabet or numbers. Internet is very useful for everything, not just studying, it will also let kids explore things and learn new stuff.It will give them an opportunity to become somebody. Totally agree with the giving of an XO computer to each and every single kid.
Internet to everyone, internet not just to work, play or hobbie but internet to EDUCATE, to HELP, to CHANGE, to be SOMEONE.
Access? Yes, I believe it will be a way to every single person to have access to it.It might not be from a computer to everyone but like the article says, from a cell,…but, it might not be in a short future, the companies will find a way so everyone can have access to it and won’t have to pay a lot.

I found this artical interesting because, it was tslking about how much people even go on the internet every day.
Another reason why I liked this articaal is because that most of the new veiewers speak engish. I thiing the XO computer is really cool,because this laptop is faster than other laptops and they have large screens and a faster hardrive and a faster dvd player. The internet will help the new users by helping kids in school and will help people doing projects.The users will be diffrent because they don’t know the internet more that the corent users.

January 11, 2011 at 7:07 pm (13 years ago)The most interesting thing to me is that children in other poor countries will be able to access the internet to learn in many different ways, such as thru satellite, cell phone if they don’t have money for cable etc. Also that laptops will be available in cheaper and smaller form. I myself could use that!
I also did not know that China will be a lead country for internet access. They are catching up to USA in every thing. I hope that by all this new technology that the world will be more connected, share ideas and look in to what other countries daily lives are like that we take for granted and we all share information such as cures for disease,help understand religion and beliefs, culture , and that it helps in some small way to make us all closer and help to make countries spread peace! 🙂 Peace out from, Alia <3

But to me it will still be used as a very good source information and education no matter what you are looking for. The internet will also brng business meetings closer to offices though screens rather than to travel, therefore reducing on pollution. The internet will also allow famillies not only to talk to each other but with the web cam they will also be able to see each other while talking.As the world grows and more people are on the internet more and more access points will be made available just like a cell phone which has a great range of use.

If more people from China use the computer more than the U.S., there would be more websites that have the Chinesae language. Also if other countries use the internet, other languages will be on the internet. For example, my gandfather reads everything on the internet in Korean on his iPad
The internet also keeps you connected with one another. For example me and my mom use Skype to see and talk to my cousins in New York. They may be far away, but we can see them every week.
It is better if more people go on the internet so they can read more people’s opinion and they can get different answers.
Also if people in Africa don’t have a library nearby, they can you the computer to see some books.
The internet can be bad too. Sometimes it rots your brain if one is playing on the computer for 5 hours instead of going outside to play.

January 11, 2011 at 8:55 pm (13 years ago)The video that we watched told me that the number of people using the internet will grow because of the XO laptop because its only $100 so people everywhere can afford it. So if the number of people that uses the internet does double in the next decade, developing countries could get internet access too.
Its a good that more countries are starting to use the internet because then they would probably get to learn more about different stuff and they could say what they want to say. They could even have the freedom to make their own blogs and websites. They can even communicate with other people through the internet by using facebook etc.
In the future if the people can use the internet then the internet will keep growing and everyone can learn something new by reading what people write on the internet because more people will have access to it. That is how I feel about the growth of the internet. Tushar.

It does give me a clear view how easy the world will be with computers everywhere.Every kid out there will have his own computer and do his homework instead of using so many papers and killing so many trees.I’am very exited when I hear that the internet is expanding and offering billions of people communication and oportunities.I personaly talk to my cousins on my laptop,I use it only for good cause,I do my homework on it I create albums of my friends and family pictures. And day by day i learn from it.

it’s cool they way it turns around is cool,but my cousin has a windows laptop that turns around like that and it cost over $2000 and they same turn around thingy magigy cost $100… like that is awesome.
But who I thinck the most users are going to be everyone….yeah everyone, rich or poor, if they already made 3d then who knows what the laptop will be in the futere.
probabley in s few years I thinck only satalite connection and a little bit of wifi might be used
so XO laptop is a great thing.

January 11, 2011 at 9:10 pm (13 years ago)I learned from reading this article that there will be more and more new users everyday around the globe which means new technology will have to be invented to provide different needs for everyone in different countries.
What I find interesting about the XO computer is that it was designed and built for children in developing countries living so remotely. The XO computer has built-in wireless and a screen that is readable under direct sunlight. It is also extremely durable and energy-efficient.
I learned that the Interent is a powerful tool full of knowledge. It will change everyone’s life because the more knowledge you gain then the more you will see things differently.

January 11, 2011 at 9:51 pm (13 years ago)The internet is a resource that can be used for multiple activities like education, playing games and other entertainment. It has a different purpose for one person than another.
The internet will be special for the next billion users because they would have a different purpose for using it. Our purpose is to mainly use internet for work and entertainment (videos, music, games…). For the next billion users the main purpose will be to learn and study. For the next billion users the laptop may be the only way to see and connect to the world. To fit the needs of those people who can`t afford expensive application`s the of prices of them may go down.
The new users will explore the world more through their laptops probably they can’t watch international movies now. With their laptops, they will be able to watch movies or look at pictures of other countries, and get a better idea about the world.
The new users may use mobile devices as their major way to connect to the Internet, The newer applications should adapt to the newer way of connection.
One thing I found interesting was the XO laptop. It`s shape and design was unique and very different than laptops we use. I welcome the next billion users to the exciting world of internet.

There has been a company making green and white XO Laptops that have extremely high ranged Wi-Fi. Anyone who donates money will donate a green and white XO Laptop.
Their goal is to give an XO Laptop to the billions of children who don’t have access to any computers. When you donate an XO Laptop you will also receive a card honouring the donation that you made.
It’s a cool laptop (I would like to own one 🙂 that is durable and very twisty.
I would be really proud to donate an XO Laptop to a child in need!!!!!!!!!

It is interesting that right now other kids in developing worlds cannot access the internet which gives you a good education on lots of different topics and all the websites you like to go on. If it wasn’t for the internet our life would be different. We would be ignorant to Google, Firefox, Facebook and email. The internet is amazing and everyone should be able to access it.
This article is meaningful to me because I enjoy going on the internet to go on Link to Learning, Bitstrips, and Cool Math 4 Kids.
The XO laptop will help the people in the developing world to be able to use the internet. The internet is amazing and everyone should be able to access it.
The XO laptop is extremely durable, brilliantly functional, energy-efficient, and fun. The internet can help educate people and has very useful information. What I found interesting about this article is the structure of the XO laptop (rectangle with little sticks sticking out of the top),style and the price (only $100) of the XO laptop. I think it is a good idea that every kid should receive an XO laptop because everyone should have the chance to be able to be educated by computer. Kids (and parents) should be allowed to explore the great wonders of the internet.

In the developing countries it may be hard to get a good education, and with the laptop you can look things up to anser you. The laptop could probably cange there life!!!!!

There is alot of poor countries out there the laptop really will help them with the learning. Other schools have the latest technology and the laptops that the poor countries are getting helps them to learn. Because the poor countries do not have the same technology.

January 12, 2011 at 9:58 pm (13 years ago)i think this gives many people that had little a chance to interact and learn. teaching children about computers is so important and manditory. the internet is and unlimited source of education and learning. there are web sites on almost everything from math to t.v. shows. this is great for not just the internet it’s awesome for thing you wouldn’t even think about like it’s a sourse of bright light so these people don’t have to buy lamps. the wifi conection is very strong so if there is a tower a couple km away you can get the itnternet conection. giving people a chance to get a quality education is priceless. this is probobly the best in vention and very inportant!

THe artical ment to me that that in the next few years the computer will be avalable to the whole world. The internet is also used for education and is a very important part of learning.
