The Spelling Debate
The Spelling Debate:
We live in a world where texting, tweeting and instant messenging or writing messages on a DS is a part of who you are as learners. Is spelling no longer important in 2011? If you think this way then you probably believe that spell check, invented spelling and other ways of communicating are more important than spelling a word exactly or the way the dictionary says . OR…. If you think that spelling tests, the dictionary and correct spelling is as important to you today as it was 100 years ago then you believe that spelling correct spelling is very important.
Please explain why you think this…back up your answer and “check for errors..ooops…did I say that?”
Here are two articles that may help you:

Changing School?
Watch this video.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/digitalnation/learning/schools/education-20.html?play
What is the main idea this video Education 2.0?
Do you agree with change or is school fine the way it is. Think about it for a moment.
100 years ago, there were one room school houses where 10 kids ranging from grade 1-8 were in one class….now there are classes that are taught virtually over the internet using web-cams.
Does our traditional view of schools need to change and if so, how?
What are aspects of school that you like that you wouldnt like to see change?

Who are We?
An identity question is hard to narrow down, maybe it doesn’t need to be narrowed at all or it is simply impossible to do.
We are people that now call Canada home, even if our family or ancestors were from somewhere else. Write an acrostic poem using the words. “Canada who are we” to explore what we are all about. Use the discussions, debates and videos from today to inform your thinking.
Reading the media message
Here are two videos from two different provinces.
Answer the following: Pick one of the videos to comment on.
How are the provinces being shown? What message(s) are you being sent? What image is being portrayed to you and how are they doing it? Was it effective in making you want to visit…how?
Enjoy.

Imagine a Place
homework instructions: audio
Imagine a place where people could eat chocolate and not feel guilty about it. Imagine a place where your dreams matched what some people can achieve. Imagine a place where education is free and all can have it. Imagine a place without hate. Imagine a world full of tree houses, where adults and kids can play and climb to the sky. Imagine a place in which purple hair would be cool once in a while. Imagine a place where there wasnt any littering but rather lots of green space. Imagine a place where we could travel back in time and watch history unfold in front of our eyes. Imagine a place where we can all imagine and believe in all life’s possibilities no matter where you live on the planet.
What’s your “Imagine a Place”?
Follow this pattern and write a descriptive paragraph.
Enjoy.
Rethinking “disABILITY”
As a culture, we have historically placed “disabled” persons in a negative way. The term “disabilities” assumes that they are not able. The Paraorchestra shows how we need to rethink how these persons are viewed.
Please write 2-3 sentences per line explaining your new thinking.
1. Write one connection 2. Write one surprise 3. How does this relate to another thing or idea that we have seen, discussed, watched, or read about this year?
